AVOID VOCs---- If you had painted your home two weeks ago, by now a large percentage of the VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) from the paint would have evaporated into the atmosphere. Certain paint types can emit VOCs are compound that in solid or liquid form have a very low boiling point. So, even at room temperature the solid or liquid form of these compounds evaporates into gas, which then is inhaled by people in the vicinity. Most odours or fragrances are caused by them. VOCs present in paint are the reason behind the strong, sharp odours in a room that is freshly painted. While many VOCs rapidly evaporate from their source, certain products like furniture made from MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) can release toxic formaldehyde for several years in low doses. VOCS enter indoor spaces through an alarmingly high number of products and we must take precautions to use low VOC operations. In 1989, WHO’s cancer research team determined that professional paints have a 40 percent higher chance of getting cancer due to the high inhalation of VOCs. For several years now there has been a global push towards more human health friendly low VOC Paints which has led to awareness and clear labelling of VOC content by all major paint brands Source from: The Hindu – 12.07.2014; Preethi Sukumaran
