AWARD-WINNING POET GIVES READING AT GCC The next presentation in the Los Angeles Writers Reading Series at Glendale Community College will feature acclaimed poet and creative writing professor Amy Gerstler reading from her work on May 20 from 12:20 to 1:30 p.m. in the Student Center. A question and answer session will follow the presentation. The event is free. Seating is limited and early arrival is advised. Recipient of the National Book Critics Circle Award in poetry for her book “Bitter Angel,” Amy Gerstler is the author of twelve other books. Her book “Dearest Creature” (Penguin 2009) was named a New York Times Book Review Notable Book of the Year. Her previous books include “Ghost Girl,” “Medicine” and “Crown of Weeds,” which won a California Book Award. Her work has appeared in a variety of magazines and anthologies, including The New Yorker, Paris Review and American Poetry Review. She currently teaches in the Writing Program at the University of California at Irvine. A new book of poetry entitled “Scattered at Sea” is forthcoming from Penguin in June 2015. The biannual Los Angeles Writers Reading Series is coordinated by GCC English instructor Claire Phillips to celebrate local writers and to give students access to literary events where they can meet and talk with some of the authors of the books they have been reading in their English classes.
