AYG- BOTSWANA BASKETBALL TEAMS ELIMINATED IN QUARTERFINALS Botswana has missed out on Africa Youth Games basketball medals after both boys and girls teams were eliminated in the quarterfinals today (May 27). The girls’ team lost 15-1 by Mali in a quarterfinal at the Botswana National Youth Centre court, while their brothers were defeated 17-7 by the Angolans. The west Africans dominated aerial balls and moved swiftly around the court to leave the local girls reeling in front of a stunned capacity crowd. The girls team coach, Shalosh Matsetse had emphasised speed and long distance shooting as a weapon and the girls showed intent with captain Monica Tlou going close twice in the early stages, but once Mali took charge of the match, they scored six points to set up a simple victory. Despite the painful defeat, the girls’ team captain, Monica Tlou said they enjoyed playing in a tournament of great magnitude. Although the boys’ team fought hard, they were easily outclassed by the superior Angola who fired a fantastic two-pointer right at the start. But the team consisting Bathusi Tirelo, Phenyo Tsheko, Bushe Ramabu and Eric Sentongo showed plenty of promise for the future as they gave a good account of themselves in a difficult match. (BOPA)
