Aarambam Review Producer: A. Raghuram Director: Vishnuvardhan Screenplay: Vishnuvardha, Subha Cast: Ajith Kumar, Arya, Nayanthara, Taapsee Pannu. Cinematographer: Om Prakash Review: ‘Arrambam’ might have received one of the best marketing strategies in Tamil Cinema, but that does not ensure a very good content, do they…? However for the fans of star, this movie might work, but not in the league of the likes of ‘Mankatha’. Movie starts of when Ashok Kumar (Ajith) informs the police Mumbai department that three bombs have been placed in three different places by him. Within no time, the department finds out the bombs but they got exploded paving way for some serious debates among the public over the lack of security of the city. As this is the case in the city, Arjun (Arya) arrives in Mumbai for an interview purpose. He however was kidnapped by Ashok with the help of Maya (Nayanthara), who happened to be the college mate of the former. Owing to the brilliancy which Arjun boasts in computer science, he was asked to hack the networks of a media firm by Ashok Kumar. Later Arjun comes to know that his lover Anitha (Taapsee Pannu) too was trapped by the gangs of Ashok. A series of events followed then prompts Arjun to resist the pressure built up by Ashok Kumar and enables the cop to catch the latter. And it is in this time, that Maya reveals the flashbacks of Ashok Kumar who once was the head of Anti Terrorist Squad and his friendship with Sanjay (Rana Daggubati). It is the accomplishment of vengeance by Ashok Kumar with the help of Arjun that the movie has reserved to be shown you up then. Well, this seems to be a tough situation for any audience to not believe what the promotional works of a movie shows you. As you are made to believe innumerous stories about the movie; be it in terms of the rigorous training schedule that Ajith had undergone, or the thrilling action sequences or even in the department of graphics, ‘Arrambam’ might not entertain you as it was supposed to. We have seen this kind of revenge drama of normal people up against the scams of the society thousand times before. And when it comes to ‘Arrambam’ too, the approach of hero is of no different – mass destruction without a second thought about the sufferings of common people. Okay, let’s make it simple. A wafer thin plot surrounding around an ATS police officer against the opposition which has his superior officer, minister and to name a few has been portrayed with elan by the maker of the movie as far as the length is concerned. Spanning well for over some two and half hours has really reduced the chances for providing an altogether racy experience from the movie. However, in a way the movie was a bit different from other similar Tamil movies that our hero has been presented as a man without much super heroism, though he remained more or less as an invincible force throughout the movie. Also, the movie failed to match the current standards of graphical works with most of the portions looking too inefficient for the task. Since questioning logic is not at all our agenda, it is better not to intrude in to that area. By the way, seeing all the serious stuff from the movie, many would have hoped to see Santhanam at least in a cameo appearance, though Arya tried hard to pull the movie on his shoulders in this department. Performance: The task of Ajith was to remain stylish and he did it neatly throughout the movie as always. He was best at his villainous approach, but lacked the so called physical change by the makers throughout the promotions. His slick one liners were enjoyable indeed. Arya, playing his romantic avatar once again on the screen with trying hard in comedy as well too has done a reasonably good job. The makers have tried hard to give the share of one liners to Arya also. Lead ladies, Nayanthara and Taapsee Pannu were in the movie to make the audience awestruck with their charm. The former however enjoyed a meatier role with a character that has soul. Kishore was given the role of an honest cop, while Mahesh Manjrekar and Atul Kulkarni displayed their villainous shades once again with a good piece of performances. Rana Daggubati looked macho enough to make you believe that he is an ATS officer as well. Technical aspects: Though visually appealing at times, ‘Arrambam’ was not up to the level when you consider the graphics works. The editing department has once again disappointed to present a racy thriller, while costume designs were better than many of the recent movies. Music: Music by Yuvan Shankar Raja became a shadow of what he has done in the past with Ajith. Though couple of ones were peppy and displayed a charming outing, the album all in all was not up to the mark. At the same time, BG scores were pitch perfect in most of the occasions. Script: The script tried to bring some freshness with introducing new names to scams such as ‘Bullet proof scam’ instead of the old tested scam names. However, this seems to have not helped the movie to regain the control over the audience. Direction: Vishnuvardhan has tested his techniques to produce a good racy thriller one, but lacked something that is ingredient to any such movie – Speed. As he displayed a rather slow piece of narration with some needless build up, ‘Arrambam’ panted like an old horse. Verdict: Not up to the mark Rating: 2.0
