Aba is dirty...... God will Forgive T.A Orji. Enyimba City, once called the Japan of Africa due to the creativity of its people has become a shadow of itself due to abandonment of the city by recent administrations. The sanitary attitudes of the indigenous too have not helped matters too. Stakeholders are however agreed that there is the urgent need to rescue the city from imminent extinct. Need we comment on cleanliness? You can only tell the blind that there is no oil in the soup, not salt or pepper as they easily prove themselves without anyone speaking or canvassing for them. People often say: Cleanliness is next to Godliness. As some things are easier said than done, how much do we translate this saying into action? We often hear people say that Aba is so dirty. Suffice it to say that Aba is really dirty, who makes or contributes to its dirtiness? Can Aba make itself dirty? Capital NO. So many individuals have been punished for non participation in the monthly exercise but what happens to the government for failing to play its own part of carting away the garbage scooped out of the gutter? The business of the government and the governed is a two-way traffic, a business of give and take. It smacks of oppression where government only receives and would not give out to its governed. Mosquitoes, rats, cockroaches, flies, snakes and other harmful reptiles breed freely in Aba because fumigators have been withdrawn from fumigating the city as was the case before the present dispensation and such workers now engaged in the task of pursuing people left and right in the name of Task Force with assorted uniforms and scattered to every nook and crannies of the city, harassing innocent people and extorting money from them. People pay sanitation fees without services rendered. If not for the sake of bore-hole owners, only God knows from where Aba inhabitants would have got their drinking water as the Aba river along the Ogbor-Hill area is grossly polluted. We appeal to the government to please reintroduce fumigation of the city to rid the inhabitants of all the pests pestering their lives. Government should also ensure that every garbage scooped out of the gutters on clean-up days are immediately removed. To ensure its effectiveness, the government should supervise the removal of the garbage rather than living it in the hands of unscrupulous contractors who concern themselves on the money they make not the services rendered.
