Abamu Laments State Of Tennis By Lekan Adedeji Nigerian tennis player, George Abamu has called on stakeholders of the aces games in the country to come to the rescue of the game before it dies a natural death as lack of regular competitions is killing the interest players have for the game. Abamu said the only major tournament in the country, Governors Cup is no more open like before and not every player can participate in it because there is no more point, it is now meant for only players with major points. He argued that tennis has become an individual sport in the country, no coach no manager, no adviser and no sponsor, players are on their own training without standard equipments. The player who last participated in the last CBN Tennis Open in Lagos said the only thing that can be done to improve tennis in the country is to organize more tournaments since “practice makes perfect.” “The situation we (tennis players) meet ourselves is unheard of, we are not happy with it as players. No tournament,” Abamu lamented. “The only major tournament in the country, Governors Cup is no more open like before. For now, it is only players with major points can participate in it, there is no more point to play, nor preliminary.” “Football players have their own teams, coaches, manger and players and they are going together but tennis in Nigeria is an individual sport, no coach no manager, no adviser, no sponsor, players are on their own.”
