Abe Shooting, Ominous Sign Ahead Of 2015 – TUC — January 16, 2014 The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has condemned last Sunday’s shooting of Senator Magnus Abe, stating that the shooting portends danger ahead of the 2015 election. The trade union congress said pre-election years in Nigeria are always marred with politically motivated murders and violence, stressing that the recent shooting, coming from a security agency, was most worrisome. The congress, in a statement signed by it national president, Comrade Bobboi Bala Kaigama and secretary general, Comrade (Barr.) Musa Lawal, said: “TUC is appalled at last Sunday’s shooting of Senator Magnus Abe, the lawmaker representing Rivers South-East Senatorial District, and several other members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who had gathered at Rivers State College of Arts and Science where the party had planned to hold a mobilisation rally. We are particularly concerned that members of the Rivers State Police Command are allegedly responsible for the shooting. “The police claim they shot no bullet at the venue of the rally, so we wonder who did. One thing is for sure: each pre- election year since 1999 has been marred by politically motivated murders and wanton threats to peaceful existence. But for providence the life of Senator Abe might have been wasted. Hopefully more details on this latest incident will soon unfold and disclose the truth of the matter.” The TUC also lamented that this and many other violent clashes that have occurred in the state within recent months were politically orchestrated by some politicians to intimidate and emasculate their real and perceived opponents ahead of the forthcoming 2015 general elections. It stated that it was rather unfortunate that such dastardly acts of brutality were being perpetrated because of elections that are still more than a year away. TUC said: “We are also disturbed by reports of proliferation of arms and ammunition in the country. We recall reported assertions by Frank Mbah, spokesman of Nigeria Police Force, that there are over 10 million illegal arms in West Africa and that about 70 percent of them are in the hands of Nigerians. He further affirmed that two million guns are in the hands of Nigerian civilians – one million registered and the remaining one million illegally held by criminals and other people. If these claims are anything to go by, it means that nobody is safe in this country.”
