About 12.5% of Delawareans live in areas of poverty. That according Governing Magazine citing data from a U.S. Census Bureau report. (The Bureau defines “poverty areas” as census tracts with poverty rates of 20 percent or more. Census tracts vary in size, but are roughly similar to neighborhoods within jurisdictions.) The report looked at data from the most recent 2010 U.S. Census. Delaware fared better than 42 other states in this metric. Mississippi had the highest percentage, with nearly half its population living in poor areas. Still, the report also indicates that the percentage of Delawareans living in areas of poverty more than doubled between 2000 and 2010. In 2010, 109,473 Delaware residents lived in areas where poverty was commonplace.
