About a month ago we wrote about the case of Marlise Munoz, a Texas woman who was left brain-dead after suffering serious medical complications. Munoz was pregnant at the time, and though her husband, Erick, told her doctors that he didn’t want his wife to remain on life support, they refused to comply with his wishes. In late January, a Texas court issued a ruling in the case and ordered Munoz to be removed from the life-support machines that had been keeping her body alive. Munoz Case Highlights Differences The reason the Munoz case so important is because, in part, it shed much-needed light on the serious differences that state laws have when it comes to medical wishes, advance directives, and individual choice. In the Munoz case, Marlise and her husband were experienced paramedics and had talked about life-sustaining treatment in the past.
