About a year ago, I was at NerdMelt checking out comic books. I cant remember what I was flipping through when a familiar voice to my right said, Oh! Thats a good one! I looked over and it was Robin Williams. It took me a millisecond to answer and I cant remember my reply, but he proceeded to tell me all about the origin story of the gang of characters I held in my hands. He was very passionate about it. Then we talked a bit about Preacher, another graphic novel I had just started reading. I remember standing in line behind him as the cashier rang up his two-foot stack of comic books. Before leaving, he made it a point to say goodbye to me. Super nice guy. He really didnt have to start that conversation but he wanted to share something that he loved. No wonder he was a great performer. He was part of that amazing generation of comics from the 70s at The Comedy Store. Comics like Richard Lewis, Andy Kaufman, David Letterman, Jay Leno, Elayne Boosler, etc. etc. a generation of comics who really changed the landscape. In high school, I remember watching Robin Williams: Live at the Roxy on Comedy Central and this one part always stuck with me, for better or for worse: youtu.be/Wr9ZDDXUWUM?t=2m10s Obviously I wasnt close to him but its surreal to say the least when someone you looked up to and let influence you is just simply not in existence anymore.
