About three months ago, I learned the Spanish word for “dragonfly” and I’ve been trying to find a way to use it ever since. I’m in the middle of writing an action packed adventure with my favorite co-author, but there is only one minor Spanish speaking character and she’s a chef. I just can’t get behind tossing them into a recipe. I’m also working on a play about two middle aged men dealing with dating from very different angles. It’s a musical comedy, but other than having one of them date a stripper with an insectuous (yeah I know it’s not a word) tattoo; I can’t think of how to utilize it there either. As luck would have it, I recently found out about an upcoming performance by a wonderful friend of mine, named Chic Streetman. He’s in a play that just finished its first run on Martha’s Vineyard and could be headed to Broadway. I reserved my seats for a staged reading coming up early next month. When I delicately asked the producer if there was a fee for my reservation, he informed me this was “an industry staged reading” with no fee for attendance. I’m absolutely positive he would much rather have a potential investor in my seats, but I’m going anyway. There was a time, many moons ago, that big – shot producers and fast paced artists regularly invited me to “industry events,” but that’s another story, so back to what I was talking about. So anyway, the play my potential Broadway bound buddy is in, turns out to be about Bob Dylan’s musical mentor, Paul Clayton. I never heard of him and thought that Dylan’s mentor was Woodie Guthrie – again with another story – sorry. Aside from being excited to see this reading because A: Chic is incredible and B: I’m a big Dylan fan – I also realized I might finally have an excuse to use my newfound Spanish word – bear with me. Dylan wrote All Along the Watchtower which was recorded and performed by Jimi Hendrix. Chic lives in Seattle where Jimi Hendrix was from and Jimi wrote another song that helps me finish my quest - - - “It’s very far away. Takes about a half a day to get there… if we travel by my” Chinchilejo! Ahh – not quite as good as Spanish Leather, but it does feel good to get it out there.
