[Abraham Devotion 4-1-2015] Joshua 4:1 When the whole nation had finished crossing the Jordan, the LORD said to Joshua, 2: Choose twelve men from among the people, one from each tribe, 3: and tell them to take up twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan from right where the priests stood and to carry them over with you and put them down at the place where you stay tonight. 9: Joshua set up the twelve stones that had been in the middle of the Jordan at the spot where the priests who carried the ark of the covenant had stood. And they are there to this day. ※※※ What do the two piles of twelve stones stand for? What is the point of so doing? What does it mean to Isrealites and us? All these deserve our deep thoughts. Firstly (the first twelve stones) were instructed by God - Joshua told the Isrealites to move the stones in the middle of Jordan river where the priest was standing and placed them at Gilgal. This represents Gods faithfulness, have already able to bring the Isrealites into Canaan, a land flowing with milk and honey. Later Joshua placed (another twelve stones) in the middle of Jordan river where the priest was standing, signifying Gods almightiness to have the running water intercepted, so that the Isrealites could walk past the river on dry land. Moreover it let the rivals realize the God was with the Isrealites. This not only serves as a memory to them, but also a reminder, a proof of Gods faithfulness and almightiness. Otherwise they would soon forget. Whenever we forget Gods faithfulness and almightiness, then we will lose help and hope. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Meditated verses: Joshua 4:23 For the LORD your God dried up the Jordan before you until you had crossed over. The LORD your God did to the Jordan just what he had done to the Red Sea when he dried it up before us until we had crossed over. 24: He did this so that all the peoples of the earth might know that the hand of the LORD is powerful and so that you might always fear the LORD your God. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Prayer items: Pray God to help us not to forget His grace and mercy, to remember forever Gods grace and mercy to us, also to memorize those who have helped us, like Joshuas attentiveness and thorough thinking. Only through these can the Isrealites be assured of long term safety. This is his sure win principle, and is worthy of our learning. Pray God to remind us from time to time. Written by Abraham Yeung.
