Absolutely. Here in New York the Chief Administrative Judge of the Supreme Court and others who govern the legal profession want to mandate that attorneys must provide and report at least fifty-hours of free legal services a year. I myself and most attorneys I know already provide in excess of fifty hours of free service and often pay several thousand dollars a year to fund the costs of representing those who cannot afford legal representation. We do this as free Americans of our own free will. To be coerced to do so for those the government says we must denies us of our basic liberty as free Americans. Not counting taxes who else, besides doctors(and that is another topic that needs discussion) is forced to work for fifty hours a week to support a government program? Sounds like a violation of the 13th Amendment which made slavery illegal. Further, for many rural attorneys who work in economically depressed areas who literally survive from week to week with little surplus, this will present a real financial hardship. If the government dictates who I must serve then those I serve now, which include victims of domestic violence and veterans will suffer because I will have less time and money for them. Government now regulates the size of our soft drinks, our indoor plumbing, light bulbs, has taken over the health care insurance business and the list goes on.
