Absolutely gutted about the Buffalo Bar closure. Thats another of Londons most fun small rock venues gone – and another space gone that I dearly loved, have many memories in; played in many times over the decade. From right back in Folk Orchestra days (when I once played keys there with a huge rip in my trousers but Id forgotten to wear underwear so I was basically hanging out onstage!) to only a few months ago, with the Hoodrats, commemorating Orgreave as loudly as we could. It was a brilliant intimate place to rock out. Its a terrible time for the small rock venue live music circuit and, expanding on that, terrible for young UK bands. Fewer places to play, almost no ways to get paid enough to cover costs, now for example 85% of music submitted to the BBC Introducing system is by solo artists (acoustic or electronic), so theres been effectively a collapse in the number of new bands attempting to get interest that way. If thats indicative of whats going on out there, its very bad indeed for rocknroll.
