Abusing sick leave is a very harsh term used by a media outlet who doesnt understand what its like to work in a public safety environment. (There is a policy in place for administration to deal with those they feel are abusing the system) It was never pointed out by the reporter that firefighters earn and are charged sick time on a different basis because of the 24-hour work shifts. We would hope that the reporter does not want a sick firefighter sick responding to her family member and possibly make things worse for both the responder and the sick/injured party. It should also be remembered that if a firefighter breaks a bone (on or off duty), that employee physically can not work until healed. Firefighters cant fight a fire with a broken arm, hand, leg, etc. We wont even touch on the stress/mental wellness issues of our dispatchers and responders. (The city has no on-the-job [OJI] policy in place for stress/mental wellness issues, you must use sick leave for that) Also, it was not pointed out that some of those off sick are still waiting for approval for on the job injury (OJI) claims where they were injured while on duty. Current policy states that an employee must use sick time until their OJI claim is approved or denied. Sick leave usage is not the only number used to control brownouts. Theres also bereavement leave, military duty, jury duty, light duty, administrative leave, etc, etc. that also play a factor into the staffing. The bottom line is if you dont have enough people hired to staff what you have, you will wind up short. Almost 20 employees retired on April 15, which put shifts with less people on April 16 with no immediate plans to hire anyone. There are almost another 20 retiring in July, still with no recruit class planned for the upcoming fiscal year. We attempted to introduce some changes last year at labor negotiations, but city administration balked at it. Unfortunately, we were not able to have this stated in the media report, because we were not given a chance to interview for this story. We look forward to the city staffing the fire department fully and protecting those who protect the citizens and visitors of this great city.
