Accident fatalities in India ‘alarming’ Girja Shankar Kaura Tribune News Service New Delhi, November 29 India contributes an astonishing 10 per cent of the world’s total accident fatalities and road accidents result in about 80 per cent of the total traffic fatalities in the country. This was disclosed by Minister of State for Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Pon Radhakrishnan while inaugurating the international conference on ‘Road Safety Scenario in India and Way Forward’, here today. “It is quite alarming that India constitutes about 10 per cent of the total road accident fatalities in the world. The road accident fatalities in the country constitute 80 percent of the total traffic fatalities,” he said. Since the socio-economic cost of road accidents is estimated over three per cent of the GDP of the nation, there is an urgency to spread road safety awareness among people of all sections of society, he added. The Minister said, “Strict enforcement of speed control, mandating the use of seat belts and helmets, ensuring fitness of vehicles plying on roads and separating lanes for non-motorist vehicles were the need of the hour”. He further said the ministry had taken a landmark initiative to provide appropriate medical care to accident victims during “Golden Hour” and a toll free phone number, 1033, had been started for reporting of accidents.
