Devotion #420 Friday, 10-18-2013 Proverbs 21:3 To do righteousness and justice is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice. I Samuel 15:22 So Samuel said, Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed than the fat of rams. The excuse of Saul is more prevalent than many people realize. Not only had Saul not heeded Gods directions; but he made the excuse of offering a sacrifice, and blamed others for it! The devil is sneaky in this. It is presented something like this: Here is something you want, or something you want to do. You know it is something the Lord would not approve; but there must be some way you can make up for it afterward. The rationalization may take several forms. The one I consider perhaps the worst, I call presumption: I know this is wrong, perhaps even a sin; But all I have to do is ask to be forgiven, and God promises to forgive! Another is like Sauls disobedience. He knew he didnt obey Gods command that he was not to spare any of the spoil from his victory over the Amalekites; but he thought he could excuse himself by blaming the people, and say they did it to offer a sacrifice! We see what God thought of that! There is another approach to this. Some people think their good deeds and the bad just need to balance out, and somehow they will avoid the penalty. But God says that we cannot pay for our sins. His Son has already paid for them; but we must accept His offer of redemption! Forgiveness is available; but remorse must be sincere. When we are tempted, it is best to reject it; but if we succumb, we are required to seek the Lord with all our heart, and ask for forgiveness. To cover up is another strong temptation!
