According to Elizabeth Glidden; This is a powerful post, and captures a lot of what I have been feeling. Where is our collective outrage? How powerful are these media depictions in controlling or directing our views of each other? This statement is very contradictory and perplexing to say the least, especially when individuals have reached out to Elizabeth Glidden about Racial inequality as well as health/educational disparities that have a negative impact upon communities of color. Our concerns have fallen upon deaf ears. To be specific, heres the background (the facts) of an issue that impacts low income and communities of color in Minneapolis: 1) A commercial entity (Expensive grocery store) moves into neighborhood (South Minneapolis) and as a result several houses will be moved (displaced) and a church has been bought. I do not know where the displaced residents moved to. One of the houses already sold for a $1.00 at a private meeting hosted by the organization behind the proposed second location of the seward co-op. 2) According to the USDA Minneapolis is a Food Desert, so the new store is supposed to serve as the primary solution, which isnt true, because of their prices in relation to organic produce. Price inflation contributes to food insecurity. Many individuals, especially those on fixed incomes have stated that they cannot afford the co-op (But no one seems to care.) 3) The proposed store received subsidies, etc, because of the Food Desert, but the products for sale are too expensive and are not feasible. Right across the street from the location where the store is supposed to be built is a Food Shelf that serves 25,000 residents in the area each year, thus meaning communities comprised of low income residents will not be able to afford the co-op. 4) A multitude of individuals in the community (Homeowners, Community Leaders, Business Owners, Churches, etc.) have collectively voiced their concerns about the Food Desert as well as Gentrification that will be a byproduct of moving an entity into our neighborhood that promotes classism as well as discriminatory hiring practices as well as lack of diversity in regard to vendors. 5) Weve asked for support with a Community Benefits agreement, but guess what-no support so Do Black Lives Matter in Our Community? #ThoughtProvokingQuestion #TeamEquality #TrueLeadershipIsAboutHumanitarianism
