According to George Zornick of The Nation, the recent drop in food stamp benefits results from a 2010 cut by Democrats of $2.2 billion from the SNAP budget for Michelle Obamas low-income healthy lunch initiative. The White House promised to find a way to offset the cuts and failed to do so, even when there were plenty of alternatives for funding. All of this was done over unfounded concerns about deficit spending and to preserve farm subsidies, leaving millions of Americans in the lurch for the sake of political expedience and the appeasement of Big Agriculture. The Democrats of today have become the Republicans of thirty years ago, able to pay lip service to social policy concerns but ultimately held fast to a corporatist agenda, and todays Republicans are only a few decades away from turning this country into Orwells Eurasia. But make no mistake, the latter is the one responsible for the forced march towards oligarchy, and theyre dragging the rest of us behind them whether we like it or not. Its important that we get this story straight, because the further we get from the truth, the faster we decline into tyranny.
