According to Patricia Cunningham, author of Phonics They Use (2009), children must understand what reading and writing are used for before they are ready to embark on their journey to literacy. Children need to understand that reading and writing is part of their real world. Consider including your children in your daily activities: point out addresses on envelopes when you pick up the mail; look through toy brochures together (we’ve gotten plenty of those recently!); share a recipe at dinner time (or in my case, a take-out menu); involve them in writing thank-you cards or postcards to grandma. When children see the “real-world” reasons for reading and writing, they have increased confidence and motivation to learn. Don’t be surprised if you walk into your child’s bedroom only to find her pretend-reading a memorized book or “writing” a note to her best friend!
