According to Princewill, about $800 million allegedly realized from the sale of the assets was never lodged into the coffers of the state government. In his view, the sales were shrouded in secrecy and lacking in competitive bidding and transparent processes in line with best practices. The sale proceeds have been channeled to serve interests other than that of the people of Rivers State, Tonye said. The accusation that Amaechi was selling state assets was not new. In the many rallies, which the Grassroot Development Initiative (GDI) organized in the various LGAs from 2014, the PDP Governorship Candidate had raised the alarm regarding the criminal sale of state assets that Amaechi inherited from his predecessors. In many of those instances, the name of the chief executive of the oil company featured prominently with a threat that an incoming PDP government in Rivers State was going to strip the buyers of those assets, believed to have been illegally acquired by them.
