According to a Wallet Hub survey, NY has the 2nd highest taxes on the middle class due to soaring property taxes and regressive sales taxes. Cuomo and other Albany insiders on both sides of the aisle like to repeat the talking point that we have the lowest middle class state income tax in 50+ years. This is technically true but only because Albany has systematically shifted the tax burden to counties, municipalities and school districts through unfunded mandates which drive up property taxes and sales taxes. The result of this tax shift is more money out of the pockets of middle class New Yorkers flowing to government. Until we have a serious conversation about reducing and eliminating unfunded mandates, while also reducing spending at all levels of government, the tax burden will continue to be crushing. I believe reducing spending can start by significantly reducing and ultimately eliminating the $3 bil. (2% of our state budget) that goes to so-called economic development projects that favor big campaign donors and regions of the state where governors and other Albany power brokers needs votes. According to American Legislative Exchange Council, NY is also one of the leading states for tax cronyism, a phrase that perfectly describes the broken system that leads to high middle classes taxes but no taxes for a chosen few.
