According to a new study, half of published papers are never read by anyone besides their authors, editors, and referees. The point of academic research is not a popularity contest, and inevitably most original research will be on areas that are esoteric and less studied, or on small questions in areas that are saturated. That being said, academia is producing prodigious quantities of useless junk research, while sucking down enormous amounts of funding, journal space, and man hours of our best and brightest.
