According to a recent Amnesty International poll 45 percent of Americans believe that torture is “sometimes necessary and acceptable” in order to “gain information that may protect the public.” Writer Ariel Dorfman wonders if these people would feel differently if they knew someone who had been tortured. He tells the story of a man who tracked down his World War II torturer and forgave him.
