According to power utility Eskom, load shedding has begun across the country due to technical problems at power stations. Eskom says the power grid is under severe strain due to unforeseen technical problems at power stations. Stage one of load shedding began on Monday morning at 11 am and will continue until 10pm. The parastatal is urging consumers and businesses to use electricity sparingly and not to leave office equipment such as photocopiers and computers in standby mode after hours. Eskom has asked industries, shopping malls and office blocks to switch off non-essential lights and machinery as stage one load shedding begins to bite. Eskom says it will provide regular updates on the status of the power system. The power system is severely constrained today due to unforeseen technical problems at power stations, Eskom said in a statement. Stage one allows for up to 1000MW of the national load to be shed, stage two for up to 2000MW, and stage three for up to 4000MW.-Additional reporting by Sapa Share this page:
