According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), U.S. National Health Expenditures (NHE) totaled $2.5 trillion in 2009, $8,086 per person, and accounted for 17.6% of U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The bill for this $2.5 trillion was paid by: Private health insurance – $801.2 billion (32% of total NHE) Medicare – $502.3 billion (20%) Medicaid – $373.9 billion (15%) Out-of-pocket personal spending – $299.3 billion (12%) The same source projected that NHE will average annual increases of 6.1% per year from 2009-2019. By 2019, NHE will reach 19.3% of U.S. GDP. This is by far the highest percentage of GDP for any country in the world. (In the U.K. and Japan, it is about 9%. In Canada, it is about 11% and in Germany about 12%.)
