According to the LA Times, Israel and Hamas have no intention of cease firing. Which means that the poor people of Gaza will be, as Howard Devoto said, shot by both sides. Whats insane is how this plays out in America, to wit: On the right, how dare the Palestinians terrorize the poor, besieged Israelis. Theyre believers in a gutter religion and should be pulverized (that this sounds suspiciously like the thought process that led to a Jewish state escapes them). On the far left, Israel is this horrible monster that is imperialist Americas stand in, wiping out the indigenous population with unthinkable cruelty and as such are the most evil people on earth (this observation made from what used to be someone elses land, taken by force). Listening to KPFK every so often, I wonder when The Protocols of the Elders Of Zion is about to be quoted and yes, I kid. Fact is, if the deeply indebted US can subsidize Israel, the cash flush Saudis can feed, clothe and house Gaza and they dont. The Palestinians are useful to them in that by claiming solidarity with them against the hated interlopers, they distract Saudi Arabias own restless youth. Israels stupid, rash and wasteful retaliation in Gaza will never squelch uprisings. And nuclear armed Israel isnt being driven into the sea. It serves Saudi and American interests that the conflict continue. Gazans and Israelis are the same people, were Semites. Being pawns in proxy wars serves us not at all.
