According to the Wall Street Journal, "A Chinese court sentenced Bo Xilai to life in prison on Sunday, after finding the once-powerful Communist Party insider guilty of bribery, embezzlement and abuse of power." This punishment contrasts starkly with the situation in the USA, where politicians openly boast of such crimes and promise to commit them if elected to office. As H. L. Mencken famously (and accurately) noted, "Every election is a sort of advance auction sale of stolen goods." Indeed, in the American political system, a politician who refused to commit such crimes would have little chance of election to office and, if elected by some fluke, virtually no chance of reelection.
