According to the data recently published by Razumkov Centre a vast majority of Ukrainian society sees its future in the European Union. Conversely, in spring 2013 more than 30 per cent of Ukrainians supported a close friendship with Russia. This number, naturally, has dropped drastically over the last twelve months. The situation on the Ukrainian political scene on the eve of elections clearly reflects this shift. The Petro Poroshenko Bloc is the front-runner. All opinion polls indicate that the president’s bloc could come out with 20-30 per cent of the votes. For example, the most recent research conducted between October 12th and 21st 2014, published by the Ukrainian Independent Information Agency, confirmed the leading position of Poroshenko Bloc and predicted that 24.2 per cent of Ukrainian citizens would vote in favour of the president’s candidates. Once the elections are over and the Ukrainian people choose their representatives, the newly elected deputies will quite soon be faced with serious challenges and not only those related to the war in the east. First and foremost, Ukraine will need to manage the dramatic economic conditions it finds itself in as well as develop strategies to curb corruption, which still exists. In addition, the newly elected parliament will need to decide on how to further continue the country’s rapprochement with the EU, pursue the implementation of the Association Agreement and resolves key energy issues. One thing is certain, Ukraine needs a strong parliament to effectively manage these crises. A coalition government that Ukraine may create, should the Poroshenko Bloc not get enough of the voters’ support, may quickly run into difficulties while trying to negotiate deals with different parties and compromising on key reforms. On the other hand, a unanimous victory of the Poroshenko Bloc could mean a risk of the concentration of too much power in the hands of the president.
