Across Melbourne yesterday, a great kidney exchange occurred. In an Australian-first, 12 people went into surgery – 6 to donate a kidney, and 6 to receive one. At the Austin Hospital, we were privileged to be one of the four hospitals involved in these procedures, in which 5 people each donated a kidney to a stranger, in exchange for a kidney compatible with their own loved one. And in an incredible act, Victoria’s first altruistic kidney donor also allowed a 6th transplant to take place. The Herald Sun followed the unfolding events – read their full story:
