Actor, screenwriter, director - Ive always thought of him as the west coast Woody Allen, with whom he shared a similar penchant for foregrounding the influence of classic European cinema. (ALEX IN WONDERLAND was his 8 1/2, DOWN AND OUT IN BEVERLY HILLS was a remake of BOUDOU SAVED FROM DROWNING, HARRY AND TONTO was an American UMBERTO D.) Among his more overlooked accomplishments: he acted in Kubricks debut feature FEAR AND DESIRE, Richard Brooks era-defining THE BLACKBOARD JUNGLE, and Vic Morrows Jean Genet adaptation (hard to believe one exists!) DEATHWATCH; he also developed that Emmy Award-winning teleseries THE MONKEES and wrote its pilot. We thank him for his good heart and many years of loving service to the industry.
