Acts 1:9—After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. Read todays devotion, A Ruling Lord, from Beside Quiet Waters, a devotion book that reminds today’s Christians that when life’s storms threaten to overcome us, the Lord promises to lead us to find peace. Facing the marine and his 1,800 buddies on the front lines in Korea were 100,000 communist troops. In the 42° below zero weather, his uniform was frozen board solid on him. With hands blue from the weather, he was trying to eat cold beans with his trench knife. The war correspondent asked him, “If I were God and could give you anything, what would you ask for?” Without hesitation the marine answered, “I’d ask you to give me tomorrow.” That’s what the ascending Lord Jesus offers his followers. At his ascension he had so much to say to his followers and so much of it is about our tomorrows. We look at those young people who this month will be confirmed or will graduate. Their spiritual wings have been growing. But are they strong enough to fly above the storms of our sinful world? Will the heat of temptation singe their wings of faith? Do they have a chance at a tomorrow? We look at them because we also look at ourselves with the same question. Time to look again at the ascending Lord Jesus. That’s no mere mortal. He’s the God-man who came to earth to save us. He’s no fake, no pushover. He’s the almighty Lord, who rules over everything. Nor does he rule arbitrarily or according to whim. The ascended Savior rules always with the interests of his church in mind. God has put all things in his hands, and his hands are strong enough to hold them. With such a ruling Lord, those graduates and I have a tomorrow. Prayer: Lord, help me believe that you are giving me a good tomorrow, even when I can’t see it. Amen.
