Acts 20:32a Now I commit you to God... Y do some people have so much difficulty letting go? I think there r 2 reasons. 1st, they think that by letting go the intimacy of the relationship will be lost or changed forever; & 2nd, a fear that the student, child, or person being mentored is not adequately prepared 4 the difficulties of the world. From Pauls previous words, including r passage today I think we can safely assume that he was suffering from some degree of separation anxiety. Certainly he was concerned 4 their safety, well-being & continued growth. Oliver Wendell Holmes once said, Most people r willing 2 take the Sermon on the Mount as a flag 2 sail under, but few will use it as a rudder by which 2 steer. In other words, will the student take the principles taught & turn those into a principled life? Paul understood his job as teacher was finished & the Ephesians were now in Gods hands. So Paul did what is perhaps the most difficult thing 4 a teacher, parent, or mentor 2 do -- he let go. Then he trusted & committed them 2 God. Have u held onto a relationship 4 2 long? Have u been afraid 2 let go of someone 4 fear they rnt ready? From r own experience we no many of the best lessons in life r learned thru experience -- sometimes as a result of mistakes. Maturity comes from stepping outside the student-teacher shadow. Do u need 2 step outside anothers shadow? Or do u need 2 allow someone 2 step away from urs? It is difficult sometimes 2 no when 2 set someone free or in r own case become less dependent. Which r u? R u, as Oliver Wendell Holmes suggested, willing 2 use the lessons uve learned as a rudder 2 steer by or r u a perpetual student?
