Administrators update 1. I am in Nelspruit again and we are busy discussing additional funding needed for especially human settlements in Phola, GaNala, Masakane and Rietspruit. This follows on an additional R82 million agreed with the Province for mainly sanitation rehabilitation in the Western and Eastern areas of Witbank. Councillors Connie Similane and Leslie Nhlapo with Directors Elija Shongwe and Kgodiso Mashile, supported by Ben Botes will take the lead in ensuring a rapid roll out of this much needed support. This is in addition to the R114 million capital budget which is mainly focusing on the upgrading of our waste water treatment plants. We are 25% spend on this programme after quarter one, well on track. 2. Progress has also been made in the process to increase our bulk purification capacity with some 20% over the next six weeks. There was unfortunately a further delay in the pothole tender but we are still hopeful to implement the further 20 000 sq m over the next 2 months. We are also launching a city wide clean up programme with the CDWs and EPWPs and a dedicated revitalisation programme in three wards around the KwaGuqa mall this week. A further programme to address potholes, storm water, pavements and clean up is being planned with the private sector and the Provincial Government. Details will follow. 3. The electrical department is busy negotiating a programme to replace our street lights with energy efficiency lighting. This may result in up to R2 million per month savings and hopefully also improve the reliability of our current lights. In the meantime all complaints are incorporated in the maintenance programmes we are running. However, we do not have the capacity to attend to all complaints immediately. 4. A huge frustration to our communities remain the fact that the areas where pipes or cables have been repaired are not rehabilitated immediately or sometimes never. I acknowledge that the municipality faces various challenges in this respect and hope that we will be able to improve on this soon. 5. Over the next few months we will be rolling out programmes to install new electricity meters and to ensure we have a temper free system with everyone paying for water and electricity consumption. In the meantime we do not install prepaid meters anymore and those who inquire about these will not be able to be helped.
