Admittedly, Ive somewhat fallen out of the contemporary film scene in Japan, opting to follow music and art developments, but even from that somewhat disinterested vantage, I feel like theres been a lull in the film circuit here for a while. The last truly interesting contemporary director I can bring to mind is Takashi Miike, and hes not been producing anything close to the caliber of his early 2000s works for years. Somewhat disheartening, considering the depth and breadth of the film community up until probably the mid-90s. Maybe Im just out of the loop, though - wouldnt mind hearing some recommendations to prove me wrong!
