Adoption 12. Sam the Man. I received a call from another private agency I have helped to find familys for their special needs children . They had placed twins with a family, the family thought they were adopting two healthy newborns. When the baby boy wasnt growing they took him to the Doctor and he was diagnosed with a syndrome called Rubinstein Taybi. Rubinstein Taybi syndrome is characterized by short statue , moderate to severe intellectual disability, broad thumbs and big toes, eye anomalies , kidney defects, misplaced patella and a increased risk of developing leukemia and tumors. The family was unprepared for a special needs child . At first the agency wanted me to find a home for both twins, then called back to say no they only needed a home for the little boy. Samuel has most what the syndrome has to offer and we are praying he does not get the cancer. When Samuel was a baby he had reflux so bad all he did was cry, He got a nissen fundoplication where they surgically go in and wrap the upper curve of the stomach around the esophagus and sew in place. This prevents the stomach content from going up on the esophagus. He also was given a g tube for feeding directly in the stomach. Samuel even had a difficult time tolerating being fed that way and about 1 year old had to go on TPN ( being fed intravenously . When the adoptive family first brought Sam to us he was all of 6 lbs he already had three haircuts and still had a head full of hair , he looked like a little old man. We promised we would keep in touch so the twins would know about each other and we have both kept true to that sending yearly pictures to each other. As Samuel grew his autistic behaviors appeared and frustration of not being able to communicate . Hes a funny little big guy. Despite his behaviors Samuel is a likable guy who likes to give hugs
