Advanced Seminar on Southeast Asian Studies Focus on Thailand 29 January – 4 February 2015 Chiang Mai University Chiang Mai, Thailand Description The 2015 ASEAN-Korea-Japan Advanced Seminar on Southeast Asian Studies will be conducted in Thailand with 45 participants, 12 from Korea, 12 from Japan, and 21 from Southeast Asia. The advanced seminar is a joint collaboration project of the Korean Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (KISEAS), Japan Foundation Asia Center and the Southeast Asian Studies Regional Exchange Program (SEASREP). Consisting of five days of intensive lectures and in-depth discussions and one day of lecture-tour, the seminar will focus on various aspects of Thailand. Local experts from different disciplines will be invited to deliver the prepared lectures supported by reading lists, which the participants are expected to read prior to the seminar. The seminar is intended to deepen understanding of Southeast Asia and provide a setting for the academic interaction of Korean, Japanese, and Southeast Asian scholars. By these means, the seminar can hopefully pave the way for future inter-regional collaboration in generating knowledge about Southeast Asia. Objectives 1.To deepen understanding of Southeast Asia by offering in-depth, intensive lectures and workshops on selected countries in the region; 2.To expose Korean, Japanese, and Southeast Asian students to new trends and development in Thai studies; and 3.To provide a venue where Korean, Japanese, and Southeast Asian scholars can meet and work with one another and build networks for future research collaboration. Participants The seminar is open to M.A./Ph.D. students, young university teachers and research staff in the social sciences, humanities, and the arts. Participants should be proficient in English, which will be the main language of the seminar. Other minimum qualifications are: •If student, has done research on Thailand or comparing Thailand with another Southeast Asian country (provide title and abstract of research); •If teacher, has taught a humanities or social science course on Southeast Asia or Asia at least once; •Is a Southeast Asian, Korean, or Japanese national; •Is below 35 years old; •Is willing to engage in multicultural interaction. Applications Interested applicants from Southeast Asia and Japan may send a one-page CV and letter of intent explaining his or her interest in the seminar to [email protected] on or before 1 December 2014. Notice of admission to the seminar will be sent by 12 December 2014 along with other details. For Korean applicants, KISEAS will take charge of opening applications for the seminar and of screening and selecting the final participants from Korea. Travel Grants Travel grants, which include airfare, meals, accommodation, and kits, are available for Southeast Asian nationals residing in Southeast Asia and affiliated with Southeast Asian universities and Japanese nationals residing in Japan and affiliated with Japanese universities.
