Advocate Observation: There is something amiss and misguided about the culture of an IEP meeting (or any school meeting for that matter). It is commonly stated that the parent/s are part of the team, but it rarely, if ever, feels that way. The school comes to the table in charge of the meeting and acting as the experts. It creates an us and them atmosphere and is, by nature, intimidating. But when we look closer at teacher, administrator, school psychology and special ed training, should they really be coming to the table as the experts? Perhaps there should be a mediator at every IEP and perhaps we do not call them mediators but an independent IEP team member. Thoughts?
