Afghanistan Upcoming Cabinet: Time to make History Taliban insurgency, narcotic illegal industry, Afghanistan aid-dependency mostly importantly the positioning of Afghanistan in the top ten of most corrupt governments in the world are challenges that not only common Afghans take the load and pay the price but the new Afghan leadership need to address them. Tens of political corruption cases filed and investigated but not even one high ranking Afghan officials is sent trial and no big fish has been convicted. The coalition government of Dr. Ghani and Dr. Abdullah, signing of Bilateral Security Agreement (BSA) between Afghans and Americans as well as signing of ‘Status of Forces Agreement’ (SOFA) between Afghan and NATO are pieces of good news for common Afghans. Still things like the formation of ministerial cabinet, appointment of new provincial governors and regaining lost trust of people from electoral commission process need to addressed and fixed. President Ghani and Chief Executive Dr. Abdullah’s agreement on formation of a coalition government included all the political oppositions in the new government that increases the level of stability, from the other hand it has increases the political compromise of public interest by both camps. It is uneasy for both President Ghani and Dr. Abdullah to form their government from clean and fresh people, since many unclean faces and names financed and campaigned for both of them during presidential election. These campaigners demand pay off their efforts in the currency of political appointment and major government contracts. People of Afghanistan - the elephant in the room is relatively irrelevant in this entire process. People will gain if the right people are appointed in the government. People’s gain can be ensured if educated, experienced and most importantly people with no history of corruption or criminal records are appointed as the members of the new Afghanistan government. This is ideal, but the extend of its practically lays down in hands of both President Ghani and Chief Executive Dr. Abdullah. People voted of these two current most powerful men during presidential election. Moreover, people are paying their taxes – the contribution in financing the government expenditures. But will these power men consider common people interests in their political appointments? Conventionally – free media, civil society, human rights organization and few other organized entities are the ones who reports about facts, advocate people interest, push and demands for policies and decisions that pays common people in democratic government. Can and will these institutions counter-balance Dr. Ghani and Dr. Abdullah’s campaign fellows political and financial muscle in formation of a better cabinet? As we have coalition government in Afghanistan, there is urgent need for a coalition of media, civil society, human rights organizations and other relevant organized social advocates to push for transparent and clean political appointments. These organization needs the backing of masses of elite Afghan citizens brain and muscles. Building this voice to defense people vs people made powerful individuals like President Ghani and Chief Executive Dr. Abdullah is not only uneasy rather needs enormous wealth and muscles, leadership, patience and dedications. Mobilizing elite masses in Afghanistan to build the people voice is the only leverage that ensures political balance between people’s power vs people made structures and powerful individuals. Engaged citizenship is not one of the options but the only option that can ensure better governance in delivering social service, maintaining and improving security, better education, health services and creating more jobs and employment for Afghanistan citizens. Most importantly it creates cultural of accountability in Afghan national revenues and expenditures systems. The transparent channeling of public fund to public organization and its fair redistribution is the only way that Afghanistan can sustain its future and move towards the vision of Afghanistan with zero tolerance to corruption and self sustain future. Building accountable government and fighting corruption is the only way that takes Afghanistan toward zero dependency towards international aid-dependency in the long run. This is a crucial time for President Ghani and Chief Executive Dr. Abdullah to make history by not appointing corrupt people in their minister cabinet and provincial governors, district administration. A clean leadership ensures a better system of governance and take Afghanistan towards a country free of structural violence.
