Afghanistan will take on Kenya in the final two matches of ICC’s - TopicsExpress

Afghanistan will take on Kenya in the final two matches of ICC’s World Cricket League Championship scheduled on 2nd and 4th of October in Sharjah which will decide their fate of automatic qualification to the 2015 Cricket World Cup in New Zealand and Australia. Afghanistan currently stands fourth in the table with 15 points behind Ireland, Netherlands & UAE. The former have already booked their place in the CWC 2015 by virtue of being the champions of WCL. Netherlands, who have finished all their games currently, stands second in the table with 18 points. UAE after winning yesterday’s game against Namibia are on 16 points. So the equation for Afghanistan’s direct qualification to the cricket world cup without going through the CWC Qualifiers is simple, two out of two wins against Kenya to increase their points tally to 19 and overtake both Netherlands & UAE who might jointly stand with 18 points at the second & third place respectively. Afghanistan and Kenya have earlier played each other on four occasions in ODIs with both of them winning couple of matches each. However, looking at the recent performances of both the teams, it seems that Afghanistan will be the hot favorite to win the series as they have easily defeated Namibia & Scotland in all their early WCL encounters. They were also pretty impressive at the ACC’s Emerging Teams Cup, recently held in Singapore where they defeated Nepal and India U-23 side but just fell short of overcoming the Pakistan U-23 team. Kenya, on the other hand, lost 2-0 to Scotland in June/July but won 2-0 against Canada in March.
