African Pilot Aviation News 49 2014 • Monday 8 December 2014 “Those who lack the capacity to achieve much in an atmosphere of freedom will clamour for power.” Eric Hoffer This is the second last African Pilot Aviation News for 2014. Next week I will be travelling to Italy in order to fly a new two-seat turbine helicopter design with a suitably qualified pilot, but I will return to South Africa on Saturday afternoon 13 December. African Pilot’s January 2015 edition The decision to place Paramount’s anti-rhino poaching Gazelle helicopter on the cover this month showing the coordination between well-trained anti-poaching personnel working with trained dogs as a unit designed to apprehend the killers of our rhinos is testament to African Pilot’s support for any anti-rhino poaching initiative. This exciting picture was taken by our assistant editor Divan Muller at the Paramount owned training base near Magaliesberg. The January edition also includes your own personal copy of African Pilot’s annual A2 calendar that has been folded twice and inserted into the magazine. African Pilot’s February 2015 edition Now that the January 2015 edition is complete, our full attention will be towards the February edition that will include the annual Rand Airport feature as well as Turboprop aircraft types. Over the next few weeks we will spend a considerable amount of time at Rand Airport so as to ensure full coverage of ALL businesses located at one of South Africa’s oldest and most historical airports. Our offices will close for the December holidays on Friday 19 December and re-open on Monday 5 January 2015. CemAir’s new Dash-8-100 airliner On 3 December CemAir launched its newly acquired Dash-8-100 37 seat airliner that will fly the Margate and Plettenburg Bay routes over busy periods. Although the weather in Margate was overcast and rainy we managed to get an air-to-air shoot in during the initial PR flight to the South Coast town. Readers should watch this fledgling South Africa airline take-off and go places. I am reliably told that CemAir’s present schedules to Margate, Plettenburg Bay and Shisen are all mostly flying to capacity. Until recently all flights have been undertaken utilising Beechcraft 1900Ds, but with the introduction of the first Dash-8-100 also the first of this particular type in South Africa, the various services are likely to increase significantly. Well done to Miles van der Molen for taking the risk to establish reliable schedules to these destinations and may your business grow from strength to strength. The pictures were taken from a Piper Cherokee six based at Margate. What is scheduled for the next few weeks? Aviation humour A woman goes to the doctor, worried about her pilot husband’s temper. The doctor asks: “What’s the problem?” The woman says: “Doctor, I dont know what to do. Every day when my husband gets back from flying he seems to lose his temper for no reason. It scares me.” The doctor says: “I have a cure for that. When it seems that your husband is getting angry, just take a glass of water and start swishing it in your mouth. Just swish and swish but don’t swallow it until he either leaves the room or calms down.” Two weeks later the woman comes back to the doctor looking fresh and reborn. The woman says: “Doctor that was a brilliant idea! Every time my husband started losing it, I swished with water. I swished and swished and he calmed right down! How does a glass of water do that?” The doctor says: “The water itself does nothing. It’s keeping your mouth shut that does the trick...” Weekly News from African Pilot Should you happen to miss out on any edition of African Pilot’s weekly aviation news briefs, please visit the website: africanpilot.co.za and click on the Aviation News link on the front page.
