After 494 days, I have finally heard from the Veterans Administration about my claim for hearing loss and issues connected with being exposed to Agent Orange. The VA said that my problems “were not connected to military service”. At Fort Hood about a week before leaving for Vietnam, I qualified with the M45 pistol, and my ears rang for 3-4 days afterwards. In Vietnam, I had a bunker directly in front of a battery of 155 howitzers that fired all night, and my ears rang for days afterward. I was involved in numerous firefights in which I fired my M16 at my right ear. And my hearing loss was “not connected to military service”. In Vietnam I was exposed to Agent Orange 11 of my 12 months (the other month I was in the hospital). On numerous occasions we watched planes drop Agent Orange to clear a place where we could build an LZ. And my issues were “not connected to military service.” The United States government has left another soldier on the battlefield.
