After all the things I have seen and experienced as a nurse, I sometimes worry that my heart has grown too cold and/or that my original purpose in nursing has been lost. And then there are days like today. Days that I experience something so horrific that my heart feels shattered and I know I will go without sleep over the worry and the hard fact that I will not know the outcome of the situation. I question if i said the right things, if there was something more I could have done. I felt helpless in the situation and the only thing I could do was look into a sweet little face and tell them that they were important and that they did not deserve the hand that they had been dealt. Days like today do not make me question my own heart but the hearts and humanity of others. Hold your babies tight and never leave them in the hands of anyone untrustworthy.
