After her first full week here, Charlie is doing fine with the other residents of the Retirement Home For Senior Wieners. Mostly because she ignores them and spends her day snoozing in the armchair she has claimed for herself. House manners, which appear to be excellent, has been a bit of a problem. When Im here and she can let me know that she wants out is absolutely perfect. When I have to work, shell hold it the full day. But if I dont get her outside immediately on my arrival home, the floodgates open and I know its my fault. I just havent been able to convince her that the dog doors are there for her benefit. She seems frightened of them, for some reason. Ill keep working with her, but I think she would learn much quicker if she would just watch the other pups using them. It seems that she makes it a point NOT to look at the dog doors, so Im not sure I can say shes actually seen any of the others go in and out. My vet made the observation that, if we can straighten out her current health issues, he believes her to be very adoptable, even though he admits that he knows my sanctuary seniors seldom leave once theyre here. Still, I have to agree with him. Despite the trauma of losing everything, shes adapting well and would probably do wonderfully if she only had the chance to be one of one or one of two, rather than the one of eight that circumstances have forced on her. In other news, Ive found a mixture that seems to agree with my friend Paulie. For the past week I have been giving him a mixture of chicken liver, ground turkey and rice, with either 1/2 of a boiled egg or a couple of tablespoons of puppy milk replacer (thank you for that suggestion, Connie Jo Collins) and hes been eating all that Ive offered at each meal. Warmed slightly in the microwave, it seems to just hit the spot! On the negative side, Peanut and Harley are both desperately in need of dentals, despite the fact that they both had one just last September. Skeeter may need one too, but he wont let me look. For some reason, both Peanut and Harley accumulate tartar faster than any dogs Ive ever seen. Im in the process now of reviewing the budget to see what else can be trimmed out of it, so that I can get their needs seen to as quickly as possible. I hope to get them in to Scott Mill Animal Hospital on June 2nd and June 9th, respectively. With my work schedule the way it is, Mondays are my only real option and since this coming Monday is a holiday, those are going to be the first days I can do this.
