After listening to a couple of sports junky buddies today I want to cut Tim McCarver a little slack. I got caught up in the hater mode because he has obviously tailed off his game over the last couple of years and his dislike of the Red Sox was not hidden. But I remember looking forward to his baseball show every week when I was a kid and he had two unbelievable careers in baseball. First as a top flight catcher and and then a broadcaster. As the son of a former professional umpire I always watched and listened with the echo of my Dads voice explaining each and every play in detail. For 25 plus years McCarver alway gave you the best insider look at baseball and was really one of the first ex ball players that mastered that on the big stage. You could usually learn a little something each game he called. What I was unaware of was that when he finished his career as a player in the early 70s with Boston he was unceremoniously dispatched he had been promised one more season and a send off deserving off a hall of famer. A farm hand by the name of Carlton Fisk was waiting to take over. Anyway I turned off the Fox tribute to McCarver when it began and now kinda wish I hadnt. So I want to say - best wishes Tim.
