MO - Looking at Snapshot could make you throw up your arms in disgust; Stray Rescue found her starving to death, tethered in a yard in north St. Louis. That was just days before someone set fire to Brownie the dog in a yard in the 4300 of Cote Brilliante. Brownie later died. This all may all sound rather hopeless. But the opposite is true. Animal activists say the tide is turning. Randy Grim, founder of Stray Rescue, says, “Yes, we pulled back a curtain that shows the dirty side of St. Louis that none of us are proud of as a community.” But exposing the abuse led to the creation of the Animal Cruelty Task Force: a cooperative effort of St. Louis police, prosecutors, Stray Rescue, and the city Health Department. Grim says there is more than just hope, there is a record of success: nearly 100 investigations, closing in on 300 citations, and 25 arrests in 9 months. And a neighborhood ‘tip’ is what saved Snapshot.
