After making a list of my favorite songs of what makes me feel inside, its a pretty even slice of Pop/rock/R&B with .2% country. Of course Cash won that. I then notice 89.8% are male performers who rarely play their instruments on stage. The other 10% were female singers full of soul. It took me to a deeper realization... Ive noticed live, and on occasion while writing... Sometimes I feel trapped, like my sense of freedom is caged in and I know what I want and feel but Im attempting to think about my instrument too much. The room stops when I am just performing and not distracted by an instrument. Im not bashing myself, I can fake play pretty well :) Im just openly admitting that Im not a pro on my guitar/piano and coming from a family of insane musicians who could play anything... Not to mention living in Nashville was a wake up call... Ive always felt guilty if I wasnt playing, I felt to be the best I was required to play an instrument. My father said to me years ago, and I wrote it down. When you write, if you hear the melody but cant play it, dont lose your hit by scrambling to learn how to play it, just press record on the tape player that you dont let out of your sight! You do not belong hiding behind your guitar or piano on stage, they are tools for you to use occasionally, not often. You were born an artist/performer, you touch people with your ability to have people feel what youre feeling through music performance. I encourage you to practice until youre blue in the face but, Learn to set the instrument down. You shine, when youre you and nothing is in the way of you. Wow...... Smart dad huh? I wont ever stop playing my guitar and piano, ever.... Maybe just make it less of a priority, focus on what I feel. A great song and a great performer is a match made in musical heaven. Everyone has their own way of performing, feeling, and its all about finding what is best for them. My list consists of some of the greatest hits of all time, with artist performers who did exactly what my dad told me to do, but I ignored the truth. Its never too late to listen.
