After months of recovery from the loss of his left wing, Belle the - TopicsExpress

After months of recovery from the loss of his left wing, Belle the Canada goose has finally been back out in the sun. We put him out by the fountain with the old goose, Thomas, to give him a gradual introduction back to the open air. Belle was ecstatic to be back outside, and wasted no time at all escaping from his fenced enclosure. We were a bit panicked at first, until we saw him basking on the back lawn with the other resident geese. Belles recovery has truly been a miraculous one. His ever-vigilant and affectionate owner, Tanya Smith, rushed him to us back in August after discovering his badly broken wing. It was a severe break to his radius and ulna, clearly the result of colliding with a power line during flight. The wing had to be fully amputated. After the initial amputation, Belle suffered from ongoing infections that required further surgeries despite thorough antibiotic treatment. Without fail, Crofton Downs Veterinary Clinic took great care to treat Belle the best they could between surgeries and recovery treatments. Finally, after some close calls, Belle showed signs of improvement. He has now fully recuperated, and is enjoying his days lounging in the sunshine, bathing in the stream, and making friends with a single female goose living at WBRT. We are all elated to see him make it through these past months. On a separate note, the amazing Tanya Smith has been a life saver for us at WBRT during our extremely busy duckling season. She has volunteered several hours each week helping us maintain and care for the birds. We have an overwhelming workload at the moment, and her contributions have been tremendous. We love you Tanya!! If any of you or someone you know might be interested in volunteering some of your time to WBRT, we would love to hear from you!! We have had a record number of admissions this month and are frantically trying to keep up with general maintenance. Please give us a ring, and tell your friends. ;) 05 08 NZBIRD
