After much insistence by my persistent wife, I started reading Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie a few days ago. Im fully immersed in it now and, while the story -- set in the bleeding heart of the Nigerian Civil War of the late 60s -- and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichies writing are very compelling in themselves, its also introduced me to a culture and a history that Ive known very little about thus far. A wonderful minor discovery, a burst of light in the books otherwise grey cloudscape, has been Highlife music. Ive heard the stuff in snatches before, but I never knew it had a name (and such an appropriate one, at that). Its a really upbeat mix of jazz and traditional West African music, very easy and fun to listen to. Heres a taste:
