After my NYSC, I was retained in the oil servicing firm where i served. I have worked there for the past eight years, being the last child and the only girl in the family, i have no body i cater for, since my four siblings are doing well in their various field of endeavour! Being the baby of the house, I still receive money from them once in a while. I have been saving my salary all these years. Last year i decided to build a house for myself in the oil city where iam based, i also bought a car for myself. However That did not go well with my family they believe, it will make it difficult for me to get a husband, for it is against Igbo tradition for a lady to acquire properties before marriage. I Started my annual leave late August, so i decided to go down to my home town to spend time with my parents and also inform them of my new plan of erecting a hostel in my town since a higher institution is located there. As i was discussing with my father to help me buy three plots of land. Immediately Hell was let loosed, he warned never to think of such ,telling me that they have been doing everything possible to conceal the car i bought and the house i built in the city and now i want to build another one. I also met one of my uncles, who told me i should forget about it unless i want to remain single...am only 29 and i feel i have along way to go in my career and my life (if Christ tarries), should i be throwing away my salary or stocking it in a bank all because iam not yet married, beside i am not the one to marry myself. My question is: is it really A TABOO in Igboland for a single lady to acquire properties?? From JANE
